TAMBOMACHAY

The archaeological site of Tambomachay is 8 Kms. (15 min.) at the northeast of Cusco City and 1 Km. from Puca-pucará. It is located at the foothills near the main road to Antisuyo, on Tambomachay river. It has an area of 437 square meters, located on 3,700 m.a.s.l. 

Its name is after two Quechua words: Tampu that means collective lodging and Mach´ay that means place of rest. However, according to other references, the word Mach´ay means caverns; and this has a connection with The Cult to Water that according to the indigenous tradition, was worshiped.
